Which one should I take?

The wheel, or
the table.

At the wheel, the clay spins and you shape it against your hands. It is genuinely hard for the first hour, and then something clicks and it is one of the better feelings available to a person. That is Intro to the Wheel.

At the table, you build by hand: pinch pots, coils, slabs, stamps. No machine, no fighting for center, and it is where everybody starts. That is Intro to Pottery 1, and both children's courses.

Neither is the beginner version of the other. They are different crafts that happen to share a kiln.

Before you come

What people
actually ask

What should I wear?

Clothes you do not mind marking. Wet clay washes out of most things but not reliably out of everything. Short nails help enormously at the wheel, and long sleeves want rolling past the elbow.

Do I take my piece home that night?

No, and this surprises everybody the first time. Clay has to dry, then be fired, then glazed, then fired again. The Halloween workshop is the clearest example: you build your ghost on Saturday 10 October and collect it the following Saturday. The six stages are laid out on the How Firing Works page.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. Every class this season says supplies are included.

I have never done this. Will I be behind?

Behind whom? Most people in the room are in exactly the same position, and both Intro courses say in so many words that they need little to no experience.

Can I come and watch first?

Come to the Open House on October 1, 2 or 3. That is precisely what it is for, and it costs nothing.

Come once and
find out.

Short courses for children, teens and adults, and something real to take home once it has been fired.
